On Cursor

At last my Cursor trial expired and I can briefly summarize my experience. I've tried to use it for the vibe coding but it turns out my coding is somehow incompatible with Cursor's expectations or something like that.

It turns out to be totally unusable for me: starting from its inability of adding files to the context automatically and finishing with absolutely inappropriate hallucinations on even the simplest code.

First, having my expectations rather high, I tried to apply it to my pet project in Rust, but the IDE wasn't able to process it correctly and generated parts of code which just won't compile. After that I assumed that maybe just Rust support is not so good and switched to the web-interface part. But even in a tiny htmx web app with a bunch of simple js files it has been adding useless functions and attempting to rewrite places totally unrelated to the task.

As a last attempt I tried to use it for minor fixes in the code of my site (which is implemented in Common Lisp) but again I could get nothing useful out of it.

Additional pain was chromium inside it: I spent about an hour trying to sign in into the service. There was no errors in UI, no messages, no nothing, just the "Login" button had no effect. At last I started the IDE from shell and found that it somehow discovered a random proxy server (no idea how and why) and tried to access the Cursor APIs via this server. Interestingly, OpenAI and Anthropic APIs were accessed without it, so the login into ChatGPT and Claude succeeded.

So at the moment I'm giving up with the Cursor, maybe will check it in some time if it survives. For now I can recommend aider and Claude Code. The former one became my daily supporting tool and the latter one is capable of solving tricky tasks but it rather expensive.
